Over the past 70 years, there has been a dramatic shift towards single use plastic in our society. We now produce 300 million tons of plastic every year, using around half that plastic just one time before throwing it away. Only 20% is recycled, and an estimated 8 million tons enters the oceans every year. It breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually being consumed by sea life and ending up in our own food chain. Plastics are here to stay, for a very long time, so we must make use of them in smart ways.
Allmade and Alternative Apparel are committed to only using recycled polyester in their triblends. On average, a single shirt keeps 6 plastic bottles from ending up in our landfills or the ocean. Human ingenuity created this mess, our ingenuity, hope and compassion have to fix it.
America alone disposes of 29 billion plastic water bottles per year. The plastic in these bottles has the same chemical make up as polyester, so they can be cleaned and processed into polyester yarn, reducing waste. Every triblend shirt contains the equivalent of 6 plastic water bottles.
